Description

Needs full sun to thrive. Rapid grower. Grass can be started from seed or vegetatively (sod, sprigs, and plugs). Grows in a variety of soils and is extremely well-suited for high traffic (e.g., dogs, kids). Bermuda is very drought-, heat-, and cold-tolerant. Similar to buffalograss and zoysia, it can tolerate extreme droughts by going dormant, recovering when it rains or irrigation is available. On the negative side, Bermuda can be aggressive and invasive (especially Common Bermuda).

Common Bermuda grass varieties (seeded) to consider are Arizona Common, Riviera, Princess-77, Sultan, Southern Star, Tex-Turf 10, Mirage, NuMex, Sahara, and Patriot (sod also). Hybrid varieties (vegetatively from sod, sprigs, and plugs) to consider are Celebration, Patriot, Premier, Tifway 419, and Tifsport. The hybrid varieties have been bred for superior aesthetics, such as finer leaf texture, improved density, and darker green color. The hybrids generally require more maintenance than common varieties, including more frequent mowing.
