Description
One of the best evergreens for screening and wildlife. Female trees produce blue berries.
The eastern red cedar is a native throughout the northern and eastern parts of Texas. It is a very dense columnar ornamental that provides excellent wildlife habitat and that can also act as a windbreak. Foliage varies in shades of green. Foliage usually develops a purple to brownish cast during winter months. Typical trees of this species are much larger and less dense in growth habit than the selected cultivars usually planted in landscape situations. Eastern red cedars require full sun and a well-drained soil for best results. They become quite open and leggy in shade. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil pH and tolerates dry, rocky soil. These trees are susceptible to cedar-apple rust.
