Description
Highly ornamental and showy small tree with spreading crown. Good understory tree or accent plant.
Redbud grows naturally throughout the eastern U.S. and Texas and is generally a forest understory tree. Its leaves are heart-shaped and glossy green. It grows in sun or shade and can be grown as either a multi-stemmed or single trunk tree. Native varieties bloom pinkish purple on bare branches in early spring. Several different varieties are available twith either smooth, dull green or shiny, crinkle-edged leaves and pink or white blooms. Of the available varieties, Eastern redbud is the most common in North Texas. Good drought-tolerant selections are Texas and Mexican varieties. Fun fact: Redbud is the official tree of Southlake, Texas.
