Description
Red oaks are great trees with outstanding fall color of brilliant red and yellows. Drought tolerant. A small version of Shumard oak.
Red oaks have a moderate to fast growth rate. They come in many shapes and sizes from conical with central leaders to wide spread and multi-trunked depending on their species. Their leaves and acorns also vary from species to species.
It's important to note that In the nursery trade, red oaks are often mixed crossbreds with southern red oak and/or pin oaks, both of which do not grow well in the North Texas area. The best bet for this area is a true Shumard red oak or a Texas red oak. The leaves, acorns, and height of Texas red oaks tend to be on the smaller side of red oaks, while Shumard red oaks have larger, wider leaves that range from pale to dark green and large green acorns that turn solid brown as they mature. Shumards are also generally faster growing and larger than Texas red oaks.
